Uganda Movie Industry Kicks Off

Nigerian movies had for long dominated the movie world making them a household item like the Lingala music dominated the music airwaves for years. Like Uganda Music displaced the Lingala Music, the same transformation is yet to be witnessed in the movie circles.

Ugandans have started acting and so far the few movies which are already screening prove that there is a lot of hope in that sector. Popular among them is "Too Late" by Moses Kays who happens to be a rich man but his wife abandons him for another man who was taking her to the western world.

Apart from the trying to mimic the western accent, it looks like all is well given chance. The movies are a serious threat to the local theater entertainment of Theatre Labonita which has been there for quite sometime.

Bobi Wine and Juliana are some of the artists who have had leading roles in these Ugandan Movies. In a related development, TV soaps like Kakibe KKi on NTV have equally come up clearly showcasing the potential in the Uganda Movie Industry.

Goats Race at Munyonyo -2008

The royal ascot goats race 2008 was held at Speke Resort Munyonyo last Saturday(30.Aug.2008). Over 17 million shillings was raised for charity and voluntary organizations.

It was an idea borrowed from a pigs race in Zimbabwe so the pigs were substituted with goats for fundraising purposes. The first goats race took place in 1993 at Kampala Rugby Grounds. The event has gained popularity overtime forcing its relocation to bigger grounds and that is how Speke Resort Munyonyo comes in very squarely.

In 1993 the event attracted 400 guests and in 2005 7,000 guests. The 2008 has surpassed 10,000 guests and it is the number one social event that brings all Ugandans irrespective of age, colour and political difference together.

Salama School for the blind, a school of 68 blind children is one of the beneficiaries of the 2008 proceeds from the goats race.

After the price giving ceremony of course for which goats performed very well, fire works kicks off lasting several minutes. Some revellers were heard saying Happy New Year ushering in a new year in September..

Esther Mugizi, the Tusker Project Fame Winner came back yesterday aboard a Kenyan Airways flight. The 21 year old from Mbarara emerged the winner in a show that had 18 contestants from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

Our very own Gaetano Kaggwa was the master of ceremony. Bobi Wine was among the artists that performed at the function .

Esther Nabasa Mugizi went home with Ugx 130,000,000/- but of course the tax man could not let her go Scot free, so URA came in squarely and deducted a cool 40 Mn as taxes according to Tabloid News.

She went out that night and when she stormed the club she was approached by some guys who wanted to dance with her but she ignored them. Gone are the days of having to pay based on how the conductor feels or how far you travel. The easy bus service which can now be code named as single fee is now in Kampala. You only have to pay 500 shillings per route and by route I mean 500 irrespective of the distance. looking at the long queues of people trying to get on board, it is confirmation of how low the price is because as long as one is not in a hurry they can afford to wait for the bus to make its return journey before they can proceed.
As the business picks buses are also increasing in number making the waiting shorter than it was when the project had just kicked off.
If you are in a hurry and about to wait for the bus assuming it has left you, the white and blue checkered taxis are still available. Multiplex Ltd a company in charge of the Kampala street parking has gazetted certain zones for these buses to park and no otter cars are allowed in these sections. Constitution Square right at the hear of Kampala is one of the main stages for these buses moving o places like Bugolobi and Kalerwe.

If you have been watching the Banking sector in Uganda you would notice that new banks have come on board. This has made the existing banks either to better their services or increase their network.

They have brought services closer to the people to the extent of some places like Ntinda, Wandegeya, Bukoto, Kansanga to not only have ATMs but fully fledged branches.

Barclays took over Nile Bank making it the number one Bank with over 50 branches in the country.

If there is any bank that is not offering its customers with ATMs right now, it should be on the verge of collapse because the service has switched from ATMs to debit cards and eventually to Credit Cards.

It is amazing how Banks these days operate. It is very normal to walk on Kampala road and you find that Banks have resorted to operating from veranda's as opposed to the air conditioned offices. Normally an Umbrella with the Bank's logo of course and some beautiful ladies are seated under it with an '' Open Your Account form Here" notice. The idea is to open your account with these ladies.

They have resorted to deploying these girls to walk to each office selling out loan services or better still calling you on basis of your account history and the message is; you qualify for a loan to a certain tune. It's not bad per say especially if you want the money and you are ready with what to use it for. However if one is going to call you that you are entitled to a loan and you had not planned how to go about it chances are you might put it to misuse and fifteen days of the loan there is totally no accountability for it.

They have what they call top up. Supposing you got a loan of 12Mn and you are to service it in say 2 years, you will be required to pay about 650,000/- per month. On paying 8 months at the rate of 650,000/- you have only paid 5,200,000/- and your balance is 10,400,000/- this lady from the bank will call you and she is like I have looked at your account and you qualify for a top up of 30,000,000/-.Supposing you say yes, they will grant you the 30,000,000/- less the 10,400,000/- plus other processing fees now that this is a new loan and of the intended 30,000,000/- you will be left with about 18,500,000/- utmost out of the 30,000,000/- loan that was granted to you.
This will push your loan repayment from 650,000/- per month to close to 1,000,000/- for three years because if you leave it at 2 years you might not sustain the programme.
This is how Banks in Uganda are doing it and probably else where. however when you default they swing back into action like attaching any valuables.

Customers lose as banks shun credit cards

While credit cards present immense opportunities, often times the cards are prone to fraud. There is a huge black market of stolen credit card numbers in the United States and other economies.

There is also a risk of bad loans since the business is based on giving out unsecured loans, creating a generation of debtors that has dogged countries such as the United States.

"With a credit card, there is always a risk that people may spend beyond their means; that is why banks are very careful with the service," Mr Kavuma.

Plans
With the success the Barclays card service has so far registered, other banks are watching with an eagle's eye keen to venture into the market.
Mr Nsubuga said plans are underway to introduce credit cards to Crane Bank customers.

"We started with the Visa debit card as the first step. Our intention is to provide the credit card as well in the future," he said.

However, lack of infrastructure at most retail outlets may further delay the process, and reduce the allure of the service.

"There is still limited or no infrastructure at point of sale to efficiently effect use of the service; there is need for financial institutions to invest in point of sale infrastructure," Mr Kavuma.

Its' savvy from a business and marketing standpoint, but its having a deadly effect on quality and creativity and we are afriad there are stars who have failed to keep up the pace and are in danger of being wiped off the face of Music industry in Uganda.

Chance Nalubega:
Has dimples the size of crater lakes in her cheeks which enhance the beauty of her smile. She came to the lime light with her single Abakyakala Mukyakale which was urging people to enjoy booze. As a moslem this was controversial enough and made her heroine to some people but that is all that can be remembered about Chance Nalubega.

Jose Chameleone:
He thinks that he is a sort of modern messiah who doesn't get an hour at homebut will get it elsewhere which is wrong. No single artiste has devoted fans like Chameleone but his ability his letting them down so badly.Its as though his creativeness only flows when he has been aggrieved and wants to get back at someone.Nekolera Mali, Bomboclat, Beffula are testimony to this.Now that he has achieved most of his dreams his zeal and creativity are on the fast lane to Oblivion.

Winnie Munyenga:
However much she hates it Munyenga can only be described as a one hit wonder. The goggle eyed curvaceous Congolese caught people's attention with her Saasira about three years ago and has never had another hit. She frantically tried to keep in the limelight by spreading anti media sentiments but Ugandans got bored and cut her off forever.

Kalibala Priscilla:
She is too sexy and gorgeuos to have had a ny serious talent. Most her fans are bedazzled by her looks and size zero body and not necessarily her music. If you asked anyone which song she sang they would find it difficult to name any. She should probably look at dancing or joining a modelling agency.

Angella Katatumba:
Its a relief to know that Angella' s future isn't entirely relying on her Music career. Ever since she came onto the Ugandan scene this beautiful royal has never had a serious hit. Even the few duets she does with the popular artistes simply never make any difference. As an entreprising, well educated business woman Angella will never starve though she will never get much from the Music Industry.

Iryn Namubiru:
She is the Current PAM Awards Female Artiste of the year and the moment she came onto the scene everyone breathed a sigh of relief. She was a fresh face with a promising fresh approach to the industry but it seems that was all she had; a promise which hasn't materialized. Judging from the recent album launch Iryn is on her way out unless somthing happens to end this sad ending.

Sophie and Sam Gombya:
They make such a cute and inspiring couple. They were even at one time very big stars but as their family responsibilities increased the two seemed to have had less time to devote to their music. It goes without saying that this couple is definately on its way out and should start looking for other means of survival for their three off springs.

Nvanungi Sheila:
She is a very beautiful woman with a body that makes men go wild with desire. When Nvanungi released the video of her hit single Doctor it stopped traffic as men just stopped to stare at her well shaped body on shop screens. Her next album was awaited with much anticipation but when it finally came it showed that Nvanungi was just a Kiwaani musician after all.
Mesaach Semakula:He loves his miusic and he is very passionate about it but his creativity revolves around the same things. His style too has become predictable and will not be exciting a few years down the road.

Oulanya:
Jimmy Okoth has never been a musician but he likes laughing at people. As a comedian he joined the Music band wagon just to make people laugh. At least that is what we would like to believe because as a Musician Oulanya is one big laugh.

The Minister of State for ICT Alintuma Nsambu appeared before the press to gain an opportunity to inform the public ON A NUMBER OF ISSUES:>>

For the last three months the Minister been has been working with the Americans to invent a computer which can be used in rural Uganda. A new computer, the first of its kind on the African continent, is made. The new computer has passed the test and ready for deployment. The computer is half the size of a bible and powered by a motorcycle-size battery. The tiny, magic Computer can run for three days without recharging - assuming the user works for 8 hours per day. It has 256 Mb of RAM and 40 Mb hard disc memory capacity. One conventional PC uses the same amount of electricity (energy) as six Inveneo computers. The user has a solar panel for recharging the Inveneo computer. The tiny computer is internet ready with wireless capabilities. The user does not need a CPU or any form of power inverter/converter. Because of its simplicity and low power> consumption, the Inveneo computer is extremely fast. It has two operating systems: Microsoft and Open windows (Linux). Nsambu wants the computer to go to the rural schools of Uganda where there is no electricity. In the area of Bonnabaggawale program (prosperity for all) the Inveneo computer will be very practical in collecting and storing data for SACCO members in rural Uganda. Inveneo Inc, a San Francisco organization that has helped Nsambu's ICT Ministry is headed by Mr. Mark Summer. The cost of the computer is $ 300. In the same quest, Nsambu has worked with Inveneo Inc. to develop a new technology which is currently being deployed in Gulu. Using solar, the new wireless technology is linking up all IDP camps of Gulu. Aid workers and School children can transfer data and access internet from the municipality headquarters. Caritas USA and the Archdiocese of Gulu are spear-heading the project. Nsambu is launching the new technology on Friday the 30th of March, 2007. Nsambu re-confirmed his dedication to helping rural and urban schools which would otherwise have no access to computer technology by providing them with state-of- the art computer labs. Starting June 21-July 9, 2007, 35 American students and teachers together with Microsoft employees are arriving in the country to set up 25 computer labs nationwide. The selected schools will be obtaining 15-70 computer laboratories. Asked about his court case in Masaka, he said that all he knows, a former body guard and a UPDF deserter, Jane Kulubya alia Jane Nalubiri stole and forged his signature to rob him of money. He was also surprised that a magistrate made him lose a case where the original cheque was hidden by the prosecutors and run the court case on unsatisfied copies. The cheque only appeared on judgment day. He also wondered how judgment would be passed where no bank official was summoned to testify in court to verify why the cheque was not honored by the bank. He also further wondered how judgment would be passed where no handwriting expert took a specimen from him and without testifying in court. The minister wondered why the magistrate, in the middle of the judgment day proceedings called him to his chambers and, without the complainant and asked him to give him the money claimed on the cheque. The minister informed the press that he appealed and the case will be heard soon. He also informed the press that he also logged in his defense against the defamation charges logged by the magistrate who mishandled his case. The minister says that through this case the truth will come out and is ready with his lawyer (John Matovu). He said that his case is a representation of many problems his constituents.

Those of you who get the chance to go to the lower side of Kampla road,must have realized that there are some changes going on at the prime located pioneer mall structure.Well the mall is just not under going renovations but will soon be demolished.It was recently bought by Jinja born Tycoon Mutaasa Kafeero who is fast emerging a major force in Kampala's property world.We are reliably informed that Mutaasa Kafeero bought Pioneer Mall from NRM Vice chairman Al Hajji Moses Kigongo last week at some undisclosed amount after beating off stiff competition from some Indian Tycoon.Kigongo has run the mall for over 15 years .Snoops say Mutaasa Kafeero is set to demolish the whole structure and put up a big and tall shopping arcade like the ones he has on Luwum street,Wilson road,and other streets across Kampala city.Construction work has already kicked off at the parking yard of the mall which we hear the tycoon wants to replace with a mall as well.

Need for a real Internet Directory of Uganda

For three years now, I have searched the web in Uganda for a true online directory dedicated to Uganda, but all I have got are something nearer to a directory. Anyway, some fellows are pretending to have created directories, but all I’ve seen are limited directories. For example none of those I have seen can provide a link to your doorstep. David J Weddi.

Hi there,Im responding to this simply because I run a directory on Uganda i.e. http://www.ugandaonline.net I will not say the good things about it but all I can say it came in at the time when there was no directory offering such a service. Thank God many are now coming up which simply makes life better for all concerned.

I will be honest to you that in your statement I do not exactly get what you mean by limited directories. All I know is that at the time of kicking off services there were limited websites on Uganda/in Uganda, this would make sense to me. The directory I represent which will be 3yrs come Mar.2007,has seen an increase of businesses, companies coming up with websites, many borrowing a leaf from the same directory. If you doubt what I’m saying we have a guest book of over 500 entries in under two years bearing in mind that not every visitor signs the g/book, at least three quarters of those entries are applauding the directory.

Otherwise it also does not make alot of sense having a directory targeting a section with no resources at all, probably that is what your statement is aiming at but blaming the wrong side all together does not play the trick either.

We launched the no pay service here otherwise what was happening is that websites were being left to themselves and trust me we have made a difference in the lives of the websites you see us promoting more so at no fee at all, and on doing that most directories have adopted a similar approach.

In conclusion not until the majority across the board say like Wandegeya trading centre realizing the need for a website and every body around there formulating a cluster of sorts on such a website that you will be able to see a directory that you desire to see.

Otherwise the directory is doing fine for those who appreciate the service for we understand these are target based services which may not necessarily be appreciated by all.

Monitor Celebrates Pike's Resignation

You should have been at the Daily Monitor's offices in Namuwongo on Wednesday afternoon when news reached the premises that William Pike,the long serving MD of the New Vision had resigned.You see the man had given the daily monitor such a beating circulation and businesswise that his departure was the only sure way of giving them hope of dong better.Guys at the Monitor feared Pike so much that when they heard he had resigned everyone was thrown into a frenzy you would think they had been promised a place in heaven.All of a sudden there was a party mood at Daily Monitor with people jumpig up and down ,hugging and planning to drown themselves in booze to celebrate William Pike's departure from the newspaper field.The board was meeting senior Managers at Imperial Resort Beach hotel in Entebbe when they received the good news from Simon Kasyate.The Board chairman called the meeting to order and toasted to Pike's departure and that was the end of the metting.The meeting was tuned into a party which went on until late.It had to be rescheduled for Thursady morning,at Serena Hotel but even then ,it was held in a party mood not the usual serious board meetings.Now we hear Daily Monitor management is planning a mega bash for its entire staff to celebrate Pikes' resignation.

MTN holds talks with Safaricom

KENYA'S biggest mobile operator, Safaricom, is in talks with MTN Uganda and Vodacom of Tanzania to help it launch borderless services in order to facilitate regional expansion. This comes barely two weeks since Celtel, the only operator with a presence in the three East African countries, launched a common service for the region in what the Daily Nation described as a “coup on Safaricom” in the race for regional clients. “We are not going to sit still and watch. We are in advanced negotiations with our partners in Uganda and Tanzania,” Michael Joseph, the Safaricom chief executive officer, told the Daily Nation last week. Last month, Celtel unveiled a seamless service called One Network, which allows subscribers in the region to make calls at local rates and receive calls free of charge while in another country in the region. Subscribers can also top up while in any of the three countries. MTN Uganda’s chief commercial officer, Eric van Veen, said the companies have been in talks for sometime, but did not say when the plans will be implemented. ‘It is true. We have been talking for two months now, even before Celtel launched One Network. We have not finalised the deal, so I am not at liberty to say when it will kick off,” he said. Safaricom has about 4.7 million subscribers in Kenya, while MTN Uganda has about 1.3 million. Celtel has bigger numbers in Tanzania. Industry sources said that since the launch of One Network, Celtel has already realised about 10% growth. However, what will happen when Safaricom, MTN Uganda and Vodacom Tanzania unveil a similar service is unknown.

Four Graduates having been down for two years with no jobs resorted to fighting unemployment with fruits.They got a loan of 3.5 Million shillings from a Micro finance and resorted to buying fruits from upcountry.They buy 500 water melons,240 sugar canes,700 pineapples,and 100 Jack fruits plus dsiposable plates at shs 120.

On average they sale about 250 plates a day at 500 Shs assuming you maintain that stand that will be a cool 3,000,000/- shillings which is a price tagged to a manager with very many years of experience coupled with qualifications..

Remember these guys are graduates but have been around with no emplyment and at this point I will say there degrees are paying off..Now if you have a degree out there or you have just graduated simply start up something going so that if at all you have to wait for three years without a job then this very business has grown and you might not even require any more employment because then your business is so demanding.

Everyone has a degree so simply think out of the box...Mukono graduates way to go boys..

DUCONT, a Dubai-based information technology service provider, has teamed up with Uganda's Solutions For Business to support financial institutions in the country.

Officials said during a presentation on October 4 that the partnership would reduce on the costs of banking services and eventually eliminate long queues at the commercial banks.

Solutions For Business Executive Director Saddiq Mwai said: "Working with Ducont is an opportunity for Ugandans to access over 25 multi media banking services via their mobile phones and this will reduce on the costs of transaction."

Talks with various commercial banks are going on to enable their customers access the services, Mwai added.
Mr Rajesh Krishnamurthi Ducont Director Sales and Marketing said that Uganda still has a lot of opportunities in telecom and mobile banking, which is not yet exploited.

The officials said a bank customer would be able to know his/her bank account balances and clear salaries, as long as one owns a mobile phone. Nile Bank is one of the banks into SMS and Internet banking.

BOU Plans Smart Cards

BANK of Uganda (BOU) is planning to introduce an electronic purse (smart card) on which electronic money will be loaded and expended at outlets that can receive e-money.
Elliot Mwebya, the bank’s director of the National Payment Systems Secretariat, said the project, which will be implemented over the next two years, would involve procurement and installation of Point of Sale machines that can read e-money cards at retail outlets countrywide
“E-money cards are efficient and safe. As a security measure, a card-holder is given a Personal Identification Number. Biometric identification can be used for those who cannot read, write or find it difficult to recall a set of numbers,” Mwebya said.
He said the cost of the project is being worked out.
Mwebya said they were preparing a concept paper because the idea has been agreed on in principle.
